Rye is a cold hardy winter grain. This variety has been selected for easy hand harvesting i.e. taller straw and bigger seeds for easier threshing and weed suppression. Winter planted grains are surprisingly easy to do without mechanization, after all that was how it was done for millennia. Plant rye in October in freshly tilled soil. It scavenges unused nutrients from previous crops.
