About

There are an incredible number of seed suppliers on the internet already. But most are located on the East or West Coast, and of the retailers in “flyover country,” very few are dedicated to preserving and promoting the best regional genetics.

With decades of experience trying basically every variety on the market, we’ve come up with dependable, rugged plants for the home garden and landscape. We’ll spare you the struggle of your “California Wonder” performing like maybe you don’t live in California.

At the end of the day, we’re a small team doing this semi-part time, and so we appreciate your patience and support as we grow.

If you see something you’d like that’s perpetually out of stock, or you’d like a rooted cutting/sprouted seedling, send us a message and we’ll get on it. We have too many things that we could be doing that unless someone tells us, we very well might overlook. And we always love to hear from the gardening community

Martin Mikulcik

I manage our seeds from New London, Missouri. Our live plant orders are fulfilled and securely shipped directly from our partner facility, Mikulcik’s Nursery Inc., located at 5327 State Route 121 S, Murray, KY 42071.

Origin Story

Flyover seeds wasn’t created in a vacuum. But its origin started long ago with my father David Mikulcik. For a more detailed backstory see the history of Mikulcik’s Nursery here

He founded a nursery dedicated to breeding and selecting the most adapted plants for Murray, Kentucky. As a plant breeder, he was very successful pushing the limits of cold hardiness farther north for blue oaks, camellias, hollies, figs, and certain flowers, while also breeding rhododendrons and Japanese maples extensively.

But his passion was all-inclusive and what started as a wholesale nursery became something more like an experiment station, trialing all the promising varieties, annual garden plants, natives and ornamentals alike and selecting for rugged reliable individuals that we can be confident will do well in our area.

I grew up in this environment. I was watering nursery stock in elementary school, watching my dad graft Japanese maples and helping root camellias, conifers, blueberries. We collected azalea seed, sprouting rows of flats in one of our greenhouses. We had 40 different kinds of bamboo, we were breeding Psuedocydonia when they first entered the country, and we were very very good at propagation

More recently my brother has taken command of the nursery and I have moved to our farm in Missouri, but I guess what I learned as a child never really left. I have a substantial garden of my own, collecting all the interesting new finds, still breeding plants and furthering the cause

This website is how I share not only what I do myself, but what my brother currently does at Mikulciks nursery to a wider audience – and what my dad dedicated his life to.
