Ribes missouriense

The missouri gooseberry! One of a handful of ribes native to our region and the most widespread. It produces green fruit ripening to purple black on compact thorny bushes.

Very well adapted, they are usually found in deep understory only making a few berries a year in these marginal conditions.

An underutilized species, ribes missouriense has seen little domestication and honestly would not be my first recommendation for somebody just wanting a gooseberry. The European gooseberry is better suited for the casual grower.

The Missouri gooseberry makes excellent fruit, thrives in our climate but is significantly harder to pick because the compact structure hides the berries beneath a layer of new growth and all the branches are thorny. But if you’re looking to be at the forefront of domesticating native ribes, enjoy the wildlife value native plants provide, or are after that subtly different flavor profile, because it is different, ribes missouriense might be for you
