The american hazelnut or filbert
Corylus americana
These are seed off healthy productive trees in Murray Kentucky selected from a wild population there. These plants must be decently resistant to disease because they are growing in completely natural conditions
I’ve come to a new appreciation of hazelnuts recently
Because the trees are short, they produce on younger trees, and you can reach to pick them off the plant before the squirrels get them
You can also plant them at a higher density and this has the unique implication that in comparison to pecans or other nut trees, if something happens and the tree dies, it’s less of a loss, because it didn’t take 70 years to get that size.
And because they’re native they reseed readily (if you don’t pick the nuts) so they’ll be easier to replace and less likely to need replacing.
And hazelnuts taste great
