Quercus macrocarpa

The burr oak is the largest seeded of the native oaks, native to Missouri, a member of the the white oaks.

White oaks are prized in furniture and barrel making the signature flavor of bourbon

The acorns off this tree are the best I have found and huge as big as a plum. This is a low tannin oak that I think is actually worth eating after a quick hot water leach one time. Even without leaching they’re good enough to eat one or two on the trail.
