Prunus munsoniana or wild goose plum
A very unique native prunus, these trees bear high quantities of large cherries or small plums.
Fruits are tart and hard with a very strong flavor reminiscent of artificial cherry.
Highly resistant to insects and birds, probably the best cherry for no spray production
I found these wild in Missouri. The green fruit are astringent not unlike persimmons but when ripe make excellent cherry jelly or tarts/pies. I’ve also made raisins. The flavor is kind of like the artificial cherry used in medicines, and they’re quite sour. You’ll want to dilute them with plenty of sugar, but these cherries are incredible for what they are and quite rare in the trade.
If you’re interested in getting a sprouted plant send me an email, I might be able to dig one up.
They need no rootstock, are naturally semi dwarf around 15ft when mature. When ripe the fruit shake from the tree. Really the only downside is they aren’t naturally sweet.
pH should be close to neutral 6.5 or so. They grow anywhere a black walnut will.
