Description
1 pkt ~ 20 seeds
Vitis rotundifolia
These are particularly hardy true muscadine grapes, collected by my father from the Kentucky Lake area many years ago. Planted in Murray Kentucky, they’ve never been damaged by the cold. This is the northern edge of their natural range, and best I can tell the hardiest on the market
Muscadines, unlike most grapes we’re used to, are dioecious, meaning you need both a male and female. We can produce small numbers of cuttings of either type, but in this listing we’re offering seed. Just make sure you save enough to get a female, most of the wild muscadines you’ll find are male and won’t make fruit.
Fruit are in clusters of only two or three but quite productive along the vine
Fruit are more tart than vinifera with very thick skins. 2cm diameter. Make excellent pies and jelly and wine with chaptalization. Not naturally high in sugars, but suitable for fresh eating.
Here the muscadines don’t get the fungal problems of other grapes so they’re the lowest maintenance of all the grapes. In other parts of the country this may not be the case
