Description
Rooted seedling
Poncirus trifoliata
The closest thing you can get to hardy citrus.
Seed comes from Ky grown plants having withstood lows of -7F without damage.
Fruit are quite good but contain a resin that can upset stomachs. It makes a delicious poncirus lemonade when dilute, a flavor unlike any citrus beautifully complex floral and acid.
Plants have the worst spines of any that I know, capable of puncturing rubber boots which makes the tangled bush a struggle to prune, so I can’t recommend any large planting, but a couple small bushes are an excellent addition to the garden or food forest, or even a security bush under a window.
